Though it occupies a tiny corner in Northern Africa, Djibouti has copious amounts of beauty and sites that you really can’t believe unless you’ve seen them for yourself. Few places have such a variety of landscapes – like volcanoes, sinking plains, limestone chimneys with steam coming from the top, salt lakes, grand canyons, and gorgeous plateaus. For those that love outdoor adventure, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy here. Enjoy snorkelling with the sharks, diving, kite surfing, and hiking. The country isn’t overly developed outside of the capital so spending time here makes for the perfect eco-travel experience as you get a peek of ancient nomadic life. Have you ever heard of the country called DJIBOUTI? If not, don't feel embarrassed... because it's a very tiny country on the Horn of Africa that gets minimal tourism -- roughly 70,000 visitors per year. Over the last 2 days, I have explore every facet of the capital & biggest city called Djibouti City. I find this place to be the most interesting country in Africa. Here are some of my quick realizations: - It's VERY EXPENSIVE -- I have spent more than $400 in the last 2 days and I haven't done much other than walk around, take a few taxis, eat 4 meals & sleep (keep in mind my visa was $90 and my hotel was $105). - Walking around the streets feels very much like France, from the colonization period that started in 1884 and ended in 1977. The people here speak French (first), Arabic (...
Djibouti is preparing for the future. The tiny country in the Horn of Africa has outlined an ambitious set of goals it hopes to achieve by 2035. These goals are the result of careful research, assisted by the World Bank, to identify sectors of the economy with the potential to generate growth. As part of this exercise, the World Bank brought representatives from Cape Verde, Dubai and Mauritius—countries that faced similar obstacles in the past—to Djibouti to share their experiences.
Djibouti is a multi-ethnic nation of over 846,687 people. Arabic and French are the country's two official languages which made communication difficult but language has never been an obstacle that I entirely resented. In its 2011 Freedom in the World report, Freedom House ranked Djibouti as "Not Free", a downgrading from its former status as "Partly Free".
